I once heard a joke that went something like this:
“A young boy comes home from school and says to his dad. “Dad will you help me with my homework.” The dad says. “Of course son, what is it?” The young boy says. “I’ve got to find out what probable reality is?” The dad scratches his head then tells his son to go up stairs and ask his mum if she’d sleep with Robert Redford for a million pounds. So the young boy goes upstairs to see his mum. He says. “Mum would you sleep with Robert Redford for a million pounds?” “Yes I would!” Replied the mum. “But don’t tell your father.” So the young boy goes down stairs and tells his dad. “Dad she said that she’d sleep with him for a million pounds but she told me not to tell you.”
“Ok. Now son, go and ask your sister if she’d sleep with Brad Pitt for a million pounds.” So the young boy goes upstairs to see his sister. “Sis, would you sleep with Brad Pitt for a million pounds?” “Yes I would!” Replied his sister. “But don’t tell dad.” So the young boy goes down stairs and tells his dad. “Dad she said that she’d sleep with him for a million pounds but she told me not to tell you.” “Well son. Here’s the answer to your question. We have the probability of earning two million pounds, but the reality is that we live with two floozies.”
Now I didn’t say it was good, before you start to say anything, however it does bring up an interesting debate about how one can use the concept from a business perspective. Your brand, company, business or staff, all have the probability to create their own reality (Whatever that is?) This can be to have market share or first brand position in your chosen field. The key is to be able to focus on your core strengths and utilize your brand definables.
